Biography 

Filippo Fraternali is Professor of Gas Dynamics and Evolution of Galaxies at the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute of the University of Groningen (NL). He obtained his PhD from the University of Bologna (Italy), where he was an assistant professor between 2006 and 2017. He did postdoctoral research in the Netherlands and was a Marie-Curie fellow at the University of Oxford (UK). He has published more than 100 scientific papers on various astrophysical topics and he is coauthor of the textbook Introduction to galaxy formation and evolution, published by Cambridge University Press. He is a recipient of the Friedrich Wilhelm Bessel prize of the Alexander von Humboldt foundation and of the George Darwin Lecturship 2021 Award of the Royal Astronomical Society. In 2023, he was awarded an ERC Advanced Grant to study the gas flows in and out of galaxies.
